A Gentle Introduction to Energy Healing
For many people, the word Reiki sparks curiosity.
Perhaps you’ve heard it mentioned in conversations about holistic healing, or you’ve seen it offered alongside other practices like sound healing or crystal work. Yet despite its growing popularity, many people still wonder:
What exactly is Reiki? And what actually happens during a session?
If you’ve ever been curious about Reiki but felt unsure what to expect, this gentle introduction will help you understand the practice and how it can support healing for the body, mind and spirit.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century.
The word Reiki translates roughly to “universal life force energy.” This life force energy flows through all living things and is considered the energy that supports vitality, balance, and wellbeing.
When this energy flows freely, we tend to feel:
calm
clear
emotionally balanced
connected to ourselves
However, stress, emotional pain, trauma, and the demands of daily life can create energetic imbalances within the body.
Reiki works by gently supporting the body’s natural ability to restore balance and harmony.
How Does Reiki Work?
During a Reiki session, the practitioner acts as a channel for healing energy, allowing it to flow to the recipient through gentle hand placements.
Rather than forcing change or manipulating energy, Reiki works in a subtle and supportive way, encouraging the body to move into a state of relaxation and balance.
When the body relaxes deeply, the nervous system shifts from a state of stress into a state where healing and restoration can occur naturally.
Many people find Reiki helpful for supporting:
stress and anxiety
emotional overwhelm
fatigue
grief and emotional healing
spiritual connection and clarity
What Happens During a Reiki Session?

A Reiki session is typically a deeply calming experience.
You remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on a treatment table while the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above different areas of the body.
Soft music and a peaceful environment help create a sense of relaxation and safety.
As the session unfolds, many people experience sensations such as:
warmth or gentle tingling
a sense of heaviness or lightness in the body
emotional release
deep relaxation
Some people simply drift into a meditative or restful state.
Each person’s experience is unique, but most leave a session feeling calmer, lighter, and more balanced.
Reiki as Part of a Holistic Healing Journey
Reiki is not about fixing something that is broken.
Instead, it gently supports the body and mind to reconnect with their natural state of balance.
Many people find Reiki helpful during times of:
emotional transition
personal growth
stress or burnout
spiritual exploration
It can also be a beautiful way to create space for rest and self-care in a busy world.
Experiencing Reiki for Yourself
Reading about Reiki can be helpful, but the true beauty of this practice is often best understood through personal experience.
