Awakening Moon: Witnessing the September Lunar Eclipse in Australia

On the night of September 7 and into the early hours of September 8, 2025, the skies above Australia will gift us with something truly spectacular: a total lunar eclipse. Often called a Blood Moon, the eclipse will wash the Moon in shades of copper and crimson for over an hour, creating a rare and awe-inspiring sight.

September 8 Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse. Affirmation: As I awaken, I acknowledge my past and, release any negativity.

But this isn’t just an astronomical event, it’s also a deeply spiritual one. For those walking a spiritual path, lunar eclipses are powerful portals of change. And as this eclipse coincides with the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere, I’ve named it the Awakening Moon, a time of reawakening, of planting seeds for personal growth, and aligning with the flow of new beginnings.

🌑 The Spiritual Significance of a Lunar Eclipse

Eclipses supercharge the energy of a full moon. Where a normal full moon might invite reflection and release, a lunar eclipse amplifies this energy tenfold. It shines a light on hidden truths, encourages us to let go of old patterns, and opens the door to transformation.

This eclipse takes place in Pisces, the dreamy, mystical water sign. Pisces energy calls us inward, inviting us to dissolve illusions, connect with our intuition, and trust the unseen currents of life. It is a moment to surrender control, release emotional baggage, and invite in healing and renewal.

When paired with the rebirth energy of spring, the message is clear:

shed what no longer serves you and plant the seeds for what you wish to grow.

🌱 The Awakening Moon and the Season of Renewal

Spring in Australia is a season of fresh starts. Buds push through the soil, blossoms open, and life returns to the land. This lunar eclipse mirrors nature’s rhythm, encouraging us to awaken from our own winter slumber.

By naming this the Awakening Moon, we acknowledge the union between celestial cycles and earthly cycles. Just as the earth softens to receive new seeds, we need to soften and encourage our inner selves to be ready to receive new intentions, dreams, and possibilities.

🕓 When and Where to Watch in Australia

The eclipse will be visible across the entire country (weather permitting!), unfolding in the early hours of Monday, September 8.

  • Eastern States (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne – AEST)

    • Penumbral phase begins: 1:28 AM

    • Maximum eclipse: 4:11 AM

    • Ends: 6:55 AM

  • South Australia (Adelaide – ACST)

    • Penumbral phase begins: 12:58 AM

    • Maximum eclipse: 3:41 AM

    • Ends: 6:25 AM

Totality, the deep, red phase, will last around 1 hour and 22 minutes, though the whole event spans several hours.

Best viewing tip: Head somewhere away from city lights. Rural areas, beaches, or open hills will provide the clearest, most breathtaking view.

✍️ Journaling Prompts for the Awakening Moon

Take time under this eclipse to turn inward and reflect. These prompts can guide your writing or meditation:

  1. What am I ready to release so that I can move forward with clarity?

  2. What dream or vision is stirring within me, waiting to awaken?

  3. In what areas of my life do I need to trust my intuition more?

  4. What seeds of intention do I wish to plant this spring?

🔮 A Simple Eclipse Ritual

You don’t need anything elaborate to honour the Awakening Moon. This is a simple ritual you can do at home:

You’ll need: a candle, a journal, a bowl of water (optional), and crystals like moonstone or clear quartz if you have them.

  1. Find a quiet spot where you can see the Moon, or sit in stillness indoors.

  2. Light your candle, acknowledging the energy of the eclipse.

  3. Hold your crystals in your hands, over your heart centre and visualise your energy and that of the moon, merging and surrounding your energy field, charging and aligning the crystals with the lunar energy, your auric energy and the energy of your intentions.

  4. Spend a few minutes journaling using the prompts above. Let your words flow freely.

  5. When ready, hold your paper or journal close to your heart. Imagine your intentions like seeds being planted in fertile soil.

  6. Sit in silence for a few breaths, picturing those seeds sprouting and growing in the months ahead.

  7. Close with gratitude to the Moon, to the Earth, and to yourself.

  8. During the lunar cycle, return to your journal and the crystals if you feel out of alignment with your intentions or wish to bask in the energy of the moon.

The Awakening Moon lunar eclipse is a rare blend of cosmic and earthly magic: a total lunar eclipse in Pisces, happening just as spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere. It calls us to release the old, awaken to our dreams, and plant the intentions that will bloom in the months ahead.

Whether you watch the Moon turn red in the pre-dawn sky or honour it with a quiet ritual at home, may this eclipse remind you of your own capacity for renewal.

This spring, under the Awakening Moon, what will you choose to awaken within yourself?
